COMPETENCIES 730.9.2 : Data Quality Assessment and Integrity The graduate evaluates key concepts and skills from health information management (HIM) standards and policies to ensure data quality and integrity in an HIM environment.

Introduction

Health information management (HIM) professionals are responsible for promoting and maintaining data quality standards. As organizations continue to adopt information systems for managing health information, the implementation of standardized clinical vocabularies and terminologies will change how health information is exchanged across the continuum.

 

Scenario

You are an HIM manager in a healthcare organization, and you are responsible for training HIM professionals on the principles of data quality. You will create a presentation to accomplish this training.

Requirements

Your submission must be your original work. No more than a combined total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. The similarity report that is provided when you submit your task can be used as a guide. You must use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission because it provides detailed criteria that will be used to evaluate your work. Each requirement below may be evaluated by more than one rubric aspect. The rubric aspect titles may contain hyperlinks to relevant portions of the course.

Tasks may not be submitted as cloud links, such as links to Google Docs, Google Slides, OneDrive, etc., unless specified in the task requirements. All other submissions must be file types that are uploaded and submitted as attachments (e.g., .docx, .pdf, .ppt).

Create a multimedia presentation (e.g., PowerPoint, Keynote) to train HIM professionals on the importance and principles of data quality.

Include a slide that explains how data quality is improved by the use of standardized terminologies and classification systems, including presenter notes (suggested length of 1–2 paragraphs of notes).

Include a slide that explains how data quality requirements may be included in organizational policies or processes, including presenter notes (suggested length of 1–2 paragraphs of notes).

Include a slide that conveys how clinical documentation improvement (CDI) and data quality are related, including presenter notes (suggested length of 1–2 paragraphs of notes).

Include a slide that explains why data quality is critical to gathering statistical data (e.g., for public health reports, disease registries, or other large-scale needs), including presenter notes (suggested length of 1–2 paragraphs of notes).

Include a slide explaining how to identify data quality problems and their root causes and how to manage or fix them, including presenter notes (suggested length of 1–2 paragraphs of notes).

Acknowledge sources, using in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.

Demonstrate professional communication in the content and presentation of your submission. Use APA referencing style.
